Enaam Ahmed wins €75,000 in the Winter Junior Challenge

The winter season came to a final point today on the Portuguese circuit of Portimao, where seven young drivers were making their last appearance of the season with the Finnish team Koiranen GP.

After a heavy winter testing season which brought the drivers from Navarra, to Motorland and Valencia, the two last weekends were used to evaluate the young guns improvement with a series of simulations.

Last weekend first outting for the Winter Junior Challenge was on the Andalusian circuit of Jerez de la Frontera, where the weather welcomed the Challenge with a fantastic December sun.

Simo Laaksonen, who gained a lot of experience and confidence since the end of the 2015 season, finished Best Performer three times out of three in Jerez de la Frontera, closely challenged by two SMP F4 NEZ Championship drivers British ace Enaam Ahmed and fifteen years old Russian Alexander Vartanyan. However, the challenger in Jerez clearly was newcomer American Quinlan Lall who managed to be on the Best Performer podium twice on the Spanish circuit.
Juho Valtanen, Finnish karting champion and Tuomas Tujula were as well the weekend’s rookies and impressively kept up the pace of their more experienced elders. The Winter Junior Challenge also greeted another American driver Devlin Defrancesco, who was stepping in the Tatuus F4-T014 for the first time and proved all along the two-days Challenge, to be a strong opponent with a tough fighting spirit.

“IT IS AN HOMOGENEOUS GROUP WE DISCOVERED THIS WEEKEND. THE GAP BETWEEN THE FASTEST LAP AND THE SLOWEST LAP WAS SEVEN TENTH. THE QUALITY IS UNQUESTIONABLY THERE AND THE GROUP IS SMALL, SO IT LEAVES ENOUGH TIME FOR THE ENGINEERS AND DRIVERS COACHES TO SPEND MORE TIME TEACHING THE DRIVERS CORRECTLY. THE WINTER SEASON IS IMPORTANT FOR THE DRIVERS AS IT IS THE TIME FOR THEM TO GET READY, SO THAT THEY CAN PUSH STRAIGHT FROM THE START OF THEIR NEXT SEASON”

AFA HEIKKINEN, CEO KOIRANEN GP

After few days break, the drivers discovered the Circuito de Algarve in Portimao where a capricious weather was alternating with sunshine and rain, spicing up the last outing of the season. Juho Valtanen set the first session fastest lap, while Enaam Ahmed recovered from a mixed-feeling Spanish weekend, being the first Best Performer of the Portuguese weekend. But the British missed the hat-trick as it was Russian Vartanyan who snatched the second title.
And for the last stint of the weekend, after a breathtaking session from all the drivers, Enaam Ahmed was crowned the Winter Junior Challenge Best Performer and won the €75.000 help to enter the 2016 Spanish F4 Championship certified by FIA.

“I AM HAPPY ABOUT THE OUTCOME OF MY YEAR AND IT IS ALWAYS SATISFYING TO FINISH ON A HIGH NOTE. IT HAS BEEN TOUGH AS THE COMPETITION WAS HARD AND I AM GLAD AS THE €75.000 PRIZE MONEY WILL SURELY HELP ME DO SEVERAL F4 CHAMPIONSHIPS NEXT YEAR”
